Not all school employees who retire want to disengage from working with schools and students. For that reason, the Wylie Retired School Employees Association was organized in October 2011 and later affiliated with the Texas Retired Teachers Association in March 2012.

WRSE is the local unit of the Texas Retired Teacher Organization with over 60 members. Any retired school employee from any district as well as those interested in public education is welcome to join WRSE. They meet the second Wednesday of the month from August through May at 10 a.m. at the Wylie ISD Service Center. The WRSE programs each month include learning and fun for all who participate in the organization.

The group recently installed new officers for 2017-’19.

The mission of WRSE is to promote the professional, economic, intellectual, social and physical well-being of its members, encourage volunteer opportunities in the community, as well as continue to support the public education of children.

During the year, members contribute volunteer hours helping different community groups and at the campuses supporting teachers and students. In addition, WRSE collects and then presents a “take-home” book to kindergartners in Wylie ISD during May.

The organization plans to provide a scholarship in 2018 to a student pursuing a career in education. A state conference for TRTA units is held yearly in April and is attended by members from throughout the state.

Over 80,000 TRTA members continue to promote public education and serve students after concluding their careers as teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria and maintenance workers, and paraprofessionals.
