Kelley leads Raiders into new era

by | Nov 11, 2021 | Latest, Sports

After missing the postseason in six of their last seven years, Wylie East is ready to course correct under new boys basketball coach Brent Kelley.

They finished 3-11 in district play last season, being swept by Princeton and Lovejoy. Wylie East ended up with a 7-20 overall record and the Raiders hired a new head coach.

Kelley is familiar with leading a program to success. In his eight years as the head coach at Whitehouse, he led the Wildcats to a record of 142-109 with three district championships and a trip to the regional semifinals in 2017-18.

Wylie East marked their first week of practices Oct. 27. After joining the team in April, Kelley said he’s been pleased by his team’s effort in the early process.

“It seems like it’s gone by quick,” Kelley said. “But when you really think about where we were when we started and where we are now, it’s been a long process. It’s gone by quickly, which I guess is a good thing. It’s been a pretty good week. Right now we’re just trying to put good days together and have bad days mixed in there. Our goal is consistency as we go through this week, which is a real grind.”
