Joseph Overman

by | Dec 9, 2021 | Obituaries

Joseph Morgan Overman II, 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021, with family by his side.

He was a longtime resident of Wylie and a longtime volunteer at the Wylie Community Christian Care Center. Those who knew him benefited from his friendship, strong work ethic, intelligence, sharp wit, kind heart and crochet hobby – he made and gifted hundreds of afghans throughout his life.

A come-and-go memorial reception is planned for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021, at Allen Funeral Home, 508 Masters Ave. in Wylie. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Wylie Community Christian Care Center, 1310 W. Brown St., Wylie, Texas, 75098.

Joseph was born on Oct. 25, 1941, to Ella C. and Joseph Morgan Overman in Norfolk, Va. He earned bachelor and master degrees from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now known as Virginia Tech) and began working as an electrical engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense. He holds a patent for a shipboard missile guidance system he co-designed during that time. In the early 1980s, he moved his family to Texas after being recruited by Texas Instruments, where he worked until his retirement after many years. Upon his retirement, he volunteered regularly at the Wylie Community Christian Care Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 49 years, Sandy Tarr Overman; and his brother, Samuel Dillon Overman.

He is survived by daughter, Amber Rice and son-in-law Mike Rice of Lavon; son Todd Overman and daughter-in-law Megan Overman of Fort Worth; grandchildren Seth Rice, Justin Overman, Luke Rice, Zackary Overman and Zoe Rice; sister Jeannine Metzger of Fredericksburg, Va.; and nephews Scott Metzger and Brian Metzger.
