Letter to the Editor from Mrs. Evans

by | Aug 12, 2015 | Opinion

Dear Editor,

Dear citizens of Wylie, have we forgotten what our town means to everyone? We have 18 schools in our district, two being Wylie High and Wylie East and the other 16 named after someone from our town. Not just anyone from our town but someone that is important. These people have represented, given time and their self to Wylie. They have made an impact on our town and that is why their name was chosen and they were given the privilege to have their name on one of our many schools.

Now that we’re building our 19th school, have we ran out of dedicated, respected, upstanding citizens here in Wylie to name our schools after? Yes, because we’re naming our new school George W. Bush. Yes, he is a former president, but has he ever heard of Wylie or ever been to Wylie? What has he ever done for our town? It’s a little too late to rename the school, but maybe the next time whoever makes these decisions will consider the other citizens in town that deserve their name on a school instead of using a president’s name. It just doesn’t fit with the Wylie way.

These are some of our important and respected citizens of Wylie and we the people do, and should always, honor them for everything they have done for our town. Thank you for being the Wylie way. Akin, Birmingham, Burnett, Cooper, Cox, Davis, Dodd, Draper, Groves, Harrison, Hartman, McMillan, Smith, Tibbals, Watkins, and Whitt. Thank you for being someone our young students can honor.

Thank you,

Mrs. Evans

Wylie
