Another school year is in the books for Wylie.

And for the Pirates, it was another successful year across the sports spectrum, which included Wylie winning district championships in boys and girls basketball and volleyball, and a second consecutive state title in girls powerlifting.

The Wylie News will now take a look back at the highlights and accomplishments of the Pirates, beginning with the fall 2025 season.

Cross country

This season brought change at the top as Colton Reynolds took over the reins of the program.

Although Wylie’s boys came up short in its quest for a ninth consecutive district title, Reynolds saw a lot of good things from his Pirates in his first season at the helm. Wylie took second place in both the boys and girls divisions at the District 9-6A meet, qualifying both squads for the Region II-6A meet.

Senior standout Zachary Brumfield, who won the district title as a junior, battled through injuries to earn fifth at the district meet. Landon Cooper and Caden Zurita also placed in the top 10, with Cooper placing ninth and Zurita 10th. Brady Kemp took 13th, Karter Kekuna 17th, Jaron Savage 18th and Thorne Owen 20th.

The Lady Pirates had a mix of talent and youth. Freshman Annabelle Angeles has a bright future. She led the way with a fourth-place finish at the 9-6A meet. Kinsley Ferguson was sixth, Vanessa Vazquez placed eighth, Kyler Eiben ninth and Paige Orr 17th

The 2025 season started with promise.

Wylie was 3-0 to begin district play, highlighted by a 34-27 triumph over Sachse – a victory that snapped an 18-game district winning streak for the Mustangs.

However, the Pirates struggled in close games down the stretch run and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021. Wylie lost four of its last five games. Four losses were by eight or fewer points, and the Pirates were eliminated from postseason contention after seeing a furious rally come up just short in a 36-28 loss to Wylie East in the Crosstown Showdown.

Despite seeing its playoff hopes ended by their biggest rival, Wylie had a strong one-two punch in the backfield with junior quarterback Jabriran Blake and junior running back Daylon Gordon. Gordon also excelled as a pass catcher, hauling in 38 receptions for 568 yards and four scores as well as 11 rushing touchdowns. Blake threw for 1,609 yards and eight scores while also rushing for 555 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Blake took over at quarterback for three-year starter Jagger Bale, who graduated in May 2025.

Wide receivers Chetatchi Nwokedi, Devin Butler, Samuel Acquaye and senior tight end Alejandro Morales were also reliable pass catchers for the Pirates.

Defensively, linebackers Evan Pillow, Kaylan Wara and free safety Donnie Skinner each had at least 60 tackles, with Pillow posting 12 tackles for loss.

Wylie had 20 selections on the All-9-6A Team.

Volleyball

For the second consecutive season, the Lady Pirates won the District 9-6A title, only this time Wylie had the title all to itself.

Not only did the Lady Pirates win the district title, but they didn’t drop a set in district play and finished a perfect 16-0 in 9-6A competition. Head coach Sherry Olivares led her team to a win over Rockwall-Heath in bi-district, followed by another appearance in the area round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs.

Despite losing four key contributors from the previous season’s run to the regional semifinals, Wylie quickly reloaded and put together another successful season.

Junior middle blocker Julia Hudgins was tabbed the district’s Most Valuable Player. Junior outside hitter Keelyn Green was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year, junior libero Jolene Bao Co-Defensive Player of the Year, junior blocker Aubrey DeGrate the district’s Blocker of the Year and senior Olivia Royal the Setter of the Year.

Olivares earned her 250th win as Lady Pirates head coach during a 3-0 win over North Garland on Sept. 12.
