Wylie incoming senior left fielder Carlee Castaneda hit the go-ahead, three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie and the Red Team went on to earn a 9-7 victory in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A-6A All-Star Game on Saturday night at Workman Sports Complex in Arlington.
The Red Team led 2-0 in the top of the first, but the Blue Team battled back, plating three runs in the bottom of the third before tacking on one run in the fourth to rally into a 4-2 lead. However, The Red Team’s offense came alive late, scoring seven runs over the final two innings to clinch the win, highlighted by Castaneda’s three-run home run.
Castaneda was also one of Wylie’s top offensive threats this season. She collected 19 hits in 9-6A play and collected at least one hit in 11 district games.
During Wylie’s bi-district playoff series against Royse City, Castaneda recorded one hit, one RBI, one run and three walks. During the final game of the regular season against rival Wylie East, Castaneda, an incoming senior, made a diving catch in left field to rob the Lady Raiders of a potential RBI hit. The Pirates went on to defeat the Raiders 3-2 in nine innings.
Following the conclusion of the season, Castaneda earned a selection on the District 9-6A first team.
Wylie finished 24-9-1 and won its final 14 games of the regular season.
