Last season, Wylie East handed the Wylie girls soccer team its first loss of the season on the final day of the regular season.
Friday night, the Lady Pirates returned the favor.
In a tightly-contested match played between two teams that had already clinched a playoff berth, Wylie got the better of its cross-town rival Wylie East 2-1 at Wylie East High School.
Kennedy Butler and Maci Hatzenbuehler each scored one goal in the win.
Although the outcome of Friday’s game didn’t affect playoff seedings, the victory clinched second place in District 9-6A for Wylie (13-2-1 district). Wylie East, which went 13-3 in district play, finished in third place.
Now the two teams will turn their attention to the playoffs.
Wylie East will play Longview at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 19 at Mesquite Memorial Stadium in the bi-district round of the Class 6A Division II playoffs. The Lady Raiders seek a fourth consecutive appearance in the regional final.
Wylie opens the playoffs at Wylie ISD Stadium at 7 p.m., Friday, March 20 against Rockwall-Heath, in a playoff rematch that the Lady Pirates won 1-0 last season. The Lady Pirates seek to improve on an area-round appearance .
