The City of Wylie is expected to cancel its May 2, 2026, general election to select a mayor and City Council members for Place 5 and Place 6 after all incumbents filed unopposed.

All incumbents applied for their respective seats by the Friday, Feb. 13, filing deadline and did not draw challengers, according to city election information.

Mayor Matthew Porter was first elected in November 2020. Sid Hoover, Place 5, and Gino Mulliqi, Place 6, were both seeking reelection to second terms. Mulliqi currently served as the council’s mayor pro tem.

Under the Texas Election Code, if no candidates filed in opposition by the deadline — including the write-in filing deadline — a city council or other local governing body would not hold an election. Instead, the official responsible for the ballot, often the city secretary, would be required to certify in writing that each candidate was unopposed. Once that certification was made, the governing body would be required to cancel the election and formally declare the unopposed candidates elected, completing the process without voters casting ballots.
