Three keys to victory: Raiders vs. West Mesquite

by | Oct 20, 2021 | Latest, Sports

The Raiders have struggled over their last five games.

After starting the year 2-1, Wylie East has started district play with four straight losses, including a 48-10 defeat to Tyler High. The Raiders look to get their first district win Thursday in their final home game against West Mesquite.

Here are three keys to a Raiders victory this week:

  • Attack with the ground game

Against Tyler, Wylie East struggled on offense, on the ground. After recording over 200 yards the previous week, the Raiders finished with 135 yards on 39 carries versus the Lions. Ka’Neal Reed was Wylie East’s leading rusher, finishing with 71 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Wylie East is best on offense when they can run down the field, converting long drives. The Raiders have a strong backfield, with Reed, Christian Williams, Terrell Washington Jr., Brandan Nurse, Tristan Lee and Charis Jackson. Wylie East’s big focus against West Mesquite is to establish strong blocking and allow the running backs to earn good yardage.
