The pitching of Chase Martin and Wyatt Wynne paced the Wylie baseball team in a 3-2 win over Rockwall in Game 1 of a Class 6A Division I bi-district playoff game at Wylie High School on Wednesday.
Martin struck out seven over 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two hits and one run (zero earned). Wynne came on in relief in the sixth inning and he proceeded to slam the door on Rockwall, allowing one run (zero earned) on no hits with one strikeout.
Wylie won the game despite striking out 14 times.
Rockwall struck first. The Yellowjackets capitalized on three walks in the first inning but the damage the damage was limited to one run, an RBI sacrifice fly.
Wylie strung together a couple of hits in the fourth inning to tie the score at 1-1. Preston Camp hit a lead-off triple and he came around to score on an RBI single by Koji Paul.
The Pirates took their first lead of the game in the fifth. Noah Smith and Cullum Doan reached on back-to-back singles to commence the inning, and Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Aiden Beck for a 2-1 Wylie lead.
That lead grew to 3-1 after Preston Camp drew a bases-loaded walk in the home half of the sixth.
Camp, Smith and Riddick McClelland each had two hits for Wylie.
Camp’s bases-loaded walk proved to be crucial. Rockwall cut the deficit to 3-2 after back-to-back errors by Wylie, but a ground-ball out that was field at third base by Smith resulted in the game’s final out.
Wylie will attempt to complete the first-round sweep of Rockwall tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Rockwall High School.
