Wylie East and Wylie both received strong pitching performances during last week’s Crosstown Showdown, but the Raiders made a few more timely pitches than the Pirates.
Levi Scroggin struck out five while allowing two runs on six hits in a 3-2 win for Wylie East in the April 22 series opener. Lukas Harold struck out five and gave up one run on five hits in a 4-1 win Friday as the Raiders completed the sweep of the Pirates.
The Raiders’ bats came alive in the fourth inning of Friday’s game, allowing Wylie East to take command. Harold aided his own cause with an RBI single. Matthew O’Neill followed with another RBI single. Carter Covington delivered the biggest blow moments later, hitting a two-run triple into center field for a 4-0 Raiders lead.
Wylie ended Wylie East’s shutout bid in the sixth inning. Cullum Doan hit a leadoff single and scored on an Aiden Beck RBI single, reducing the Pirates’ deficit to 4-1. Doan finished with two hits.
The pitching of Wyatt Wynne and David Hanley kept Wylie within striking distance. They combined for seven strikeouts and limited the damage to five hits and three earned runs.
