Wylie High esports defends, earns title

by | Dec 18, 2025 | Education

Since its start in 2020, Wylie High School’s esports roster has skyrocketed in number, and the team’s ability to earn and defend multiple titles reflects the program’s focus on skill development.

Merriam-Webster defines an esport as, “a multiplayer video game used as the basis for an organized competition.” Current esports sponsor, Robert Arthur, said there were between 30 to 40 students participating when he assumed the position in February of 2024. Since then, the program has expanded to approximately 80 members, with potential for continued growth.

“Not all sports are athletic —like chess— and esports is currently the fastest-growing extracurricular club activity in Texas,” Arthur said.

Students develop the knowledge needed for higher level play by competing in spring and fall seasons. During last school year’s championships, the Wylie esports team earned several top finishes, including its third State Championship title in Fortnite, a state championship in Apex and USA regional championship in Marvel Rivals. The team also claimed back-to-back Vanta Esports championships in Mortal Kombat 1 and earned high placements at the state level in Rocket League and Valorant. Other games include Mario Kart, Brawlhalla, Super Smash Bros. and the recently-added Splatoon. The Wylie High School esports team was recognized for its achievements at the October WISD school board meeting.
