Daylon Gordon’s 330 yards of offense weren’t enough in Wylie’s 35-27 loss to Garland on Friday night at Wylie ISD Stadium.
Gordon scored four total touchdowns on the evening — three on the ground and one through the air. Still, the trio of Garland (3-4, 2-3 District 9-6A) quarterback Carlos Mojica, running back Sam Marshall and receiver Saint Dickens came up with the big plays and led the Owls to the win.
Garland came out fast, scoring 28 points in the first half, which would have been enough to win the game outright. The Owls slowed down in the final two quarters, but their defense held strong for most of the night — including a 55-yard pick-six by Zechariah Sanders that ended up being the difference.
The Pirates cut the Garland lead to eight with 50 seconds to play when Gordon connected with Alejandro Morales for a 13-yard score, but they couldn’t recover the onside kick, and the Owls were able to kneel out the clock.
After starting District 9-6A play with three consecutive victories, Wylie (3-5, 3-3) has now dropped three straight. To stay in postseason contention, the Pirates will need a win over Lakeview Centennial in two weeks.
