Wylie cross country competes in Alabama

Wylie drove 10 hours to Huntsville, Alabama, to compete in the Twilight at PR’Ville on Saturday.

Wylie was only one of two schools from Texas, along with The Woodlands. The meet also brought in teams from California, Georgia, New Jersey, Mississippi and Tennessee. 

Senior Zachary Brumfield cracked the top 20, placing 18th with a time of 16:08 to set the pace for the Pirates in the boys 5,000-meter run. Caden Zurita, also a senior, placed 33rd with a 16:20. Senior Thorne Owen was 144th in 17:17, followed by senior Brady Kemp, who placed 146th in 17:19. 

Freshman Luke Boruk ran to 176th place in a time of 17:35, while junior Jaron Savage took 185th in 17:39. Sophomore Lincoln Shumard ran to a personal best time of 18:09, good for 250th out of 805 runners. Senior Michael Gonzales placed 278th in 18:24 and junior Jose Santiago was 307thwith an 18:32. 

Wylie finished the night with two PRs, both by underclassmen.

Sophomore Kyndell Bacon had the other PR for Wylie. She ran to 122nd place in the girls 5,000-meter run with a time of 21:40.

Freshman Anabelle Angeles led the way for the Lady Pirates in Huntsville, placing 34th with a 19:38. Seniors Kyler Eiben and Kinsley Ferguson also cracked the top 100. Eiben placed 86th in 20:50, while Ferguson was 89th in 20:56. 

Junior Alexis Lee (113th, 21:28), freshman Tesnin Idris (133rd, 21:53), senior Nikki Bhakta (133rd, 21:53), freshman Emerson Pierce (171st, 22:55) and sophomore Mia Palka (172nd, 22:56) also competed for the Lady Pirates. 

The Lady Pirates placed 15th out of 46 teams, while Wylie’s boys finished 17th out of 63 squads.
