Council approves drainage utility system

by | Oct 2, 2025 | Latest, news

Wylie residents will soon see a new fee on their utility bills. Last week, City Council voted to establish a municipal drainage utility system to fund long-term stormwater and flood control improvements.

The council began the Tuesday, Sept. 23, meeting by recognizing Manufacturing Day, Fire Prevention Week, Hispanic Heritage Month, and a partnership between Wylie Animal Services and Best Friends Animal Society.

Mayor Matthew Porter also recognized Kim Spicer, who was recently named the sole finalist for Wylie ISD superintendent, succeeding outgoing Superintendent David Vinson.

Following public comments and unanimous approval of the consent agenda, council considered the creation of a Municipal Drainage Utility System.

“This will allow the city to levy equitable drainage charges based on the impervious area, ensuring that properties contribute fairly to the system based on the runoff they generate,” said Tommy Weir, the city’s public works director.
