From children’s tales to Broadway favorites, the Wylie High and Wylie East theatre departments are bringing a lineup of performances to local stages this season that promises something for every audience.
Wylie East will open its season with the musical “Big Fish: School Edition,” while Wylie High begins with “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.” Both shows will be performed in October.
Polly Harrison, director of theatre at Wylie High said, ‘“The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” is a children’s story that will be performed for elementary and intermediate students at school matinees in addition to evening performances for general audiences.”
The story of Edward Tulane, a toy rabbit, spans multiple years and settings. To help guide audiences through these shifts, the cast and crew plan to use costumes and projections to mark the transitions.
Other upcoming productions at Wylie High include the senior-directed show “Track and Field” in November and the musical “Little Shop of Horrors” in January.
“Little Shop of Horrors” will also be performed as an entry for the Schmidt and Jones Musical Theatre Awards and the Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards. Additionally, the department will compete in the UIL One Act Play Contest and the Junior Varsity One Act Play Contest in the spring.
Wylie East’s season-opening musical “Big Fish: School Edition” explores family relationships and brings imaginations to life with moments of fantasy. As Will Bloom navigates his father Edward’s secrets and extravagant stories, he finds truth and reconciliation along the way.
