When asked who the best wide receiver between brothers Amarean and Amir Porter was, they both cracked a smile.
“I would say myself,” Amarean said.
“I would say myself, too,” Amir said, “but we have our weaknesses and also things that we excel at.”
Growing up, they both played in the same recreation leagues, including 380 Sports, and at times were on the same team, despite Amarean, a senior at Wylie East, being one year older than Amir, a junior.
Amarean describes himself as a deep threat in the passing game with solid hands and can run the entire route tree. Amir said that he possesses similar traits, although Wylie East head coach Marcus Gold said that he is more of a threat in the red zone, given that he is 6-foot-3.
Regardless of where Gold has placed the Porter brothers on the field, they have been big-time playmakers for the Raiders. Last season, the Porter brothers finished first and second for Wylie East in receiving yards. Amarean dominated as the team’s No. 1 option, finishing with 60 receptions for 1,037 yards and 12 touchdowns, while Amir had 26 receptions for 439 yards and four scores.
Their efforts helped to lead the Raiders to a second straight 10-win season and a second consecutive playoff appearance.
“It was very fun because we hadn’t really won that much before,” Amarean said. “Going into the playoffs and winning, it was a good experience.”
