The Wylie Community Band will present a free Sunday afternoon concert at 2 p.m., July 27, at the Wylie High School Auditorium, located at 2550 FM 544.
Titled “Persuasion,”, the concert promises a variety of musical selections, from classical and jazz to pop and patriotic favorites.
“We will have something for everyone! Classics, jazz, pop, marches, soloists and more,” said Ross Grant, conductor of the Wylie Community Band.
Featured soloists include saxophonist Jim Mortenson, who will perform the lush ballad “Persuasion,” and euphonium player Mark Montgomery, who will take the stage for a patriotic medley titled “American Portrait.”
The band’s trumpet section will also be highlighted in an upbeat jazz arrangement called “Free Range Trumpets.”
Additional selections include the finale of Symphony No. 3 by Vittorio Giannini, Verdi’s dramatic “The Forces of Destiny” and “New York 1927,” a lively arrangement evoking the ragtime sounds of the Roaring ’20s.
Audiences will also hear “El Relicario,” a Spanish march that tells the story of a bullfighter who promises a locket to his beloved, only to be mortally wounded in the arena. As he draws his final breath, he presents the cherished relic—a moment that has moved audiences for more than a century.
The event is free and open to the public.
