Dodd dedicates outdoor learning space

by | Jun 10, 2019 | Education

One student’s legacy will live on at Dodd Elementary

The school’s administration, teachers and PTA united to create an outdoor learning space in honor of former student Bella Martinez. The space includes a tree and a bench.

Bella passed away in January from a mitochondrial disease, which occurs when cells’ mitochondria are unable to produce enough energy for the body to function. She was 14.

“We thought it would be nice sentiment to give something that shows life never ends – it continues on,” said volunteer Rebecca Welch. “Whoever wanted to, donated money towards it. We had other people in the community who knew Bella and wanted to help too. We got the tree planted and planned all this, but it was all the efforts of Dodd Elementary – the teachers, the administrators, the Dodd PTA – and the surrounding community.”
