Wylie East graduate and standout baseball player Garrett McCain signed a contract Friday with Detroit Tigers, three days after by selected by the team in 2017 Major League Baseball draft.

McCain, a member of the Oklahoma State baseball team the last three seasons, signed the contract at the team’s spring training facility in Lakeland, Fla. The drafting and signing occurred following McCain’s best year as a collegian, in which he batted .388 with 87 hits, of which 19 were doubles and five were triples.

The OSU junior also was the Big 12 Tournament MVP, a first-team All-Conference selection and a 2017 Baseball America All-American selection.

While at Wylie East, McCain played several positions for the Raider baseball team, including pitcher, and was a three-year starter at quarterback for the East varsity football team. He said the Tigers are looking at him as a center fielder, a position he played for much of his time at OSU.
