This past week, Tay Madkins took second place in the long jump in the 4A Region II meet at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The West Texas A&M football signee leaped 22-03.75, just behind Texarkana Liberty-Eylau’s Denzel Green’s 23-05.50.

The state meet is scheduled for May 14-16 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Keeley Morrow ran in the girls’ 800 meters last season in Class 3A.

Madkins followed his long jump showing with a third-place finish in the triple jump. He leaped 45-01.50 and led the Braves to 16th place (14 points).

Qualifying for state in the long jump were Liberty-Eylau’s Green 48-05 and Argyle’s Dan Ledford 46-07.75.

Morrow just missed making it to state for the second straight year in the 800 meters, taking third with a time of 2:22.62, and she was ninth in the 400 dash.

Ajayla Samarripa took 13th in the pole vault (7-07.75).

The Lady Braves ended up in 26th overall with six points.

Softball starts off playoffs

The Lady Braves opened the 4A Region II playoffs with a two-game sweep of Carrollton Ranchview.

They won the bi-district opener 14-1 at Community and 13-10 at Ranchview in the finale over the District 11-4A first place finishers.

Up next is a best-of-three area-round series with Celina, which took third in 9-4A at 6-4. The Lady Bobcats had a bye in the first round, since there wasn’t a 10-4A.

Baseball postseason bound

The Braves are set to make their long awaited return to the playoffs.

They will face 11-4A No. 3 seed Dallas Wilmer-Hutchins in the Class 4A Region II bi-district round.

Community (10-6 overall as of May 4) last made the playoffs in 1995, where they fell 8-6 to Pattonville Prairland in 2A bi-district action.

One week ago, the Braves closed out the 12-4A slate with a 7-6 loss at Princeton.

They finished second in the standings at 7-3 behind 10-0 Bonham.

Also advancing were Princeton 5-5, with Melissa and Anna tying for fourth at 4-6. Quinlan Ford ended up 0-10.

Community lost 10-1 at Kennedale and rebounded with a 4-2 victory over host Kaufman in a couple of pre-playoff games.
