Wylie East recently completed its fourth year in Class 6A, and the Raiders remain one of the top programs in District 9-6A.

The Wylie News is proud to introduce the second installment of a three-part series celebrating the best teams, athletes, moments and performances from this past school year. The categories and winners for the second annual C&S Media High School Sports Awards were chosen by sports editor David Wolman, with winners being published over three weeks.

Part 1 (July 16) included the Biggest Story, Breakthrough Moment, Newcomer of the Year and Best Team

Part 2 (July 23) will highlight the Best Game, Best Finish, Biggest Upset and Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year. 

Part 3 (July 30) will wrap up the series with Coach of the Year, Most Improved Athlete, Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete.

These are the winners of the second installment of the series. 

Best Game: Covington’s hit lifts Raiders to baseball win in Crosstown Showdown

Wylie East has played some memorable games against crosstown rival Wylie, including an 8-7 Raiders victory in eight innings during the 2025 season.

Although neither of the two games this season required extra innings, Wylie East made more plays of the timely variety, including a 3-2 win on April 22, as the Raiders notched their first season sweep of the Pirates since the two schools became district opponents four years ago.

Wylie led 1-0 in the first inning on a Preston Camp RBI sacrifice fly. Wylie East tied the game at 1-1 with a Lukas Harold RBI single in the top of the third, but the Pirates retook the lead after a Chase Martin RBI single in the bottom of the third.

The Pirates never scored again behind a strong outing from Raiders pitcher Levi Scroggin, who worked around six hits and struck out five over seven innings.

Brandon Johnson tied the score at 2-2 after he scored on a passed ball in the fifth. Two innings later, Carter Covington lined an RBI double into right field to give the Raiders their first lead, 3-2.

Best finish: Olufemi’s buzzer-beater lifts Wylie East over Lakeview Centennial

Wylie East alum guard Praise Olufemi scored on a putback as time expired to lift the Raiders to a thrilling 49-47 victory over Lakeview Centennial on Jan. 13.

With the score tied at 47 and overtime looming, the Raiders got three shots at the basket. A missed 3-pointer was followed by another missed putback before the ball came out to Olufemi, who calmly tipped it in as the buzzer sounded.

Wylie East controlled the game for the first three quarters, but Lakeview Centennial came back in the fourth quarter and briefly took a 42-40 lead with 3:52 remaining.

Sharp-shooting guard Ayden Biscarro-Davila answered by hitting his fifth 3-pointer of the night to give Wylie East a 47-44 lead with one minute left in regulation. Lakeview Centennial responded with a 3-pointer of its own with 47 seconds remaining, setting up the dramatic finish.

Biggest upset: Lady Raiders beat previously unbeaten Tomball in regional semifinals

The Lady Raiders booked their fourth consecutive trip to the Region II-6A Division II Final after shutting out previously undefeated Tomball 2-0 in the regional semifinals at Waco ISD Stadium.

Wylie East came out the more determined team.

With 6:47 remaining in the first half, rising senior forward/midfielder Sophie Preston received a pass from rising junior Seyi Ajakaiye and kicked the ball into the net for a goal and a 1-0 Lady Raiders lead.  

Tomball applied more pressure in the second half, but Wylie East rising senior goalkeeper Hailey Fincher made timely saves to keep the Lady Cougars’ potent offense without a goal.

Wylie East finally created further separation from Tomball in the 63rd minute. Recent graduate Brooklyn Reiter dribbled through the right side and kicked the ball over the hands of Tomball’s keeper for a goal and a 2-0 Lady Raiders lead.

Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year: Madison Akers, cross country/girls’ soccer/track and field

After winning the District 9-6A individual title in girls’ cross country as a junior, Akers played a key role in helping the Lady Raiders achieve a program first during her senior season.

Akers earned a crucial 13^th-place finish at the Region II-6A meet with a time of 18:58 – a mark that helped to clinch a third-place squad finish and the first-ever team berth in the state meet for Wylie East.

At the Class 6A state meet, Akers impressed in Round Rock, placing 48^th in 18:46, just shy of her personal best.

On the track, Akers was a regional qualifier in the girls 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run, and at the district meet, was second in both events and also took third in the 3,200.

Akers also played defender for a Wylie East girls’ soccer team that surrendered just 17 goals in 27 matches. She was named to the All-9-6A first team following the conclusion of the season.
