The Wylie East boys and girls basketball teams took a brief hiatus from District 9-6A play last week.
With only one game on the docket for both squads, the Raiders took full advantage of the limited time that they had on the court.
And for the Wylie East boys, it was a much-needed effort.
One week after suffering its worst loss of the season – a 78-44 setback to Grand Prairie – Wylie East bounced back in a big way on Dec. 2, earning a hard-fought 47-42 home win over Denton Braswell at the Williams Center.
In what proved to be a nip-and-tuck affair throughout, Wylie East overcame a 16-15 first-quarter deficit, a 25-23 halftime deficit, a 33-30 third-quarter deficit, before outscoring Braswell 14-7 in the fourth quarter to rally for the win.
In the girls’ contest, a 10-7 first-quarter run proved to be the difference in a 45-36 road triumph for the Lady Raiders. Wylie East continued to build on that advantage, outscoring Ursuline Academy 28-20 over the second and third quarters to take a 38-26 lead into the final eight minutes.
Six different players scored for Wylie East, led by a game-high 15 points from Sharmayne Jones. Zoey Lundberg added 12 in the win, followed by nine from Sidney Sanders, five from Morgan Jennings, three from Mychal Henderson and two by Gracie Edge.
Wylie East is back in action this Friday against Sachse at the Williams Center. The girls’ game will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 7.
