After sharing the District 9-6A title last season with Wylie East, the Wylie volleyball team has the crown all to itself this season.

The Lady Pirates defeated Sachse 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-15) on Tuesday to complete a perfect 16-0 run in district play, all without losing a set.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment,” said Wylie head coach Sherry Olivares. “Wylie has shared the title several other times but never an outright title. The more impressive accomplishment is the 16-0 record and not dropping a set.”

Juniors Julia Hudgins and Keelyn Green powered Wylie’s offense, with Hudgins posting 17 kills and 16 digs, while Green added 14 kills and 12 digs. Junior Aubrey DeGrate contributed nine kills, two blocks and three digs. Junior Jolene Bao had 22 digs to power Wylie’s defensive efforts in the back row. Senior Olivia Royal dished out 21 assists, followed by 19 from sophomore Berkeley Weidinger.

Wylie (27-12 overall) will conclude the regular season on Friday with a non-district match against JJ Pearce (26-12), set for 5:30 p.m. at the Montgomery Center. The Lady Pirates will open the playoffs next Thursday against an opponent still to be determined.

Wylie will look to build on last season’s run to the third round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs.

“Our overall experience on the team and how we faced adversity last year helped us build confidence for this year,” Olivares said. “We believe, trust and support each other throughout the match. We play for each other.”
