The Wylie Pirates faced two difficult opponents in Friday night’s contest: lightning delays and the Flower Mound Jaguars. Both put a damper on the festivities of Wylie’s home opener.
After a two-hour, 15 minute delay that occurred after the opening kickoff, Flower Mound struck quickly, taking a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter en route to a 34-14 victory. The game was called with 4:34 remaining in the third quarter because of more inclement weather.
Wylie’s rushing attack was a bright spot. Junior running back Daylon Gordon finished with 126 rushing yards on 15 carries with one score. Senior Jayden Martin had a two-yards rushing touchdown with 1:55 remaining in the second quarter that gave Wylie its first points of the ballgame. The Pirates finished with 163 rushing yards.
Wylie struggled to contain Flower Mound wide receiver Carter Massey. Massey finished with 181 receiving yards on six catches to go along with a 59-yard touchdown with 7:55 remaining in the first quarter to open the scoring.
Wylie (0-2) returns to action next Friday as the Pirates begin District 9-6A play against North Garland from Williams Stadium in Garland. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
