In spite of an estimated six percent increase in population, the overall 2015 crime rate in Wylie decreased 28 percent per 1,000 population, a report issued by Wylie Police Department shows.

The report divides crimes into two major categories, violent and property crimes. From those categories, the police department investigated 48 violent crimes last year, the same number as was reported in 2014, and 393 property crimes, down from 533 in 2014.

“Wylie showed a significant decrease in the overall crime rate, 28 percent,” Police Chief Anthony Henderson said. “Although everyone in the department has contributed to the overall decrease, I believe the fact that the narcotics unit is now fully staffed and working diligently has made the greatest impact.”

The data shows that violent crime totaled 48 in 2015, the same as in the prior year. However, that calculates to a six percent decrease because of population growth. In 2013, there were 35 violent crimes reported.

Violent crimes increased in two of four categories, rape and robbery, while aggravated assaults dropped significantly. Police investigated 11 robberies, compared to two in 2014 and five in 2013, and 21 rapes, compared to 18 in 2014 and nine in 2013.

Henderson attributed the increase in rape and robbery numbers to a change in department operations and a change in how information is reported. The rape number went up, the chief explained, because the department is now conducting most of the investigations instead of turning cases over to the Collin County Child Advocacy Center, thus the number of cases handled by WPD rose. Robberies now are reported by the number of victims involved, instead of incidents, so that a robbery of three persons at a single location is counted as three separate incidents instead of one.
