Pirates shut out Patriots in key district victory

by | Oct 23, 2021 | Latest, Sports

Relying on the defense and running game, the Wylie Pirates churned out a much-needed district victory.

Wylie (3-2, 3-5) stopped Lakeview Centennial (1-4, 4-4) twice in the red zone to win 24-0. Both teams ran the ball early and often in the game, resulting in just eight first-half possessions.

The difference, however, was finishing off drives. The Pirates scored on two of their four drives, the first on a touchdown pass to Seth Kramer in the first quarter. The score capped off a 16-play, 77-yard drive.

The Patriots tried to respond with a long drive but were stopped on fourth down from the Wylie 21-yard-line. Blake Fuller ran for a 52-yard touchdown on the ensuing drive to give the Pirates a two-score lead heading into the break.

Lakeview Centennial got into Wylie territory just once in the second half when a Wylie fake punt attempt gave the Patriots the ball inside Pirate territory. Wylie stopped them again on fourth down and iced the game with a Braden Gilbert 41-yard field goal and another Fuller touchdown. Fuller finished the game with 182 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Wylie will take on Sachse (4-1, 5-3) next Friday.

A full recap of Wylie versus Lakeview Centennial will be available in the Oct. 28 issue of The Wylie News.
