The Wylie and Wylie East tennis teams traveled to Rockwall last week for the District 9-6A tournament.
Both schools advanced players to the Region II-6A tournament April 20-21 in Waco, and for Wylie, it was a historic two days on the court. The Pirates won district titles in all five divisions and added regional qualifications with runner-up finishes in boys singles and mixed doubles.
Sophomore Ella Garza cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the finals to claim the 9-6A championship in girls singles.
Sophomore Ryan Han won the district title in boys singles, defeating his opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
The Pirates’ duo of senior Anvitha Kommera and sophomore Snehitha Kommera finished first in girls doubles, punctuated by a pair of 6-2 wins in the finals.
Senior Kushal Sheth and junior Brandon Wallace teamed up to win the district championship in boys doubles, capped by a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory in the final.
One of the most competitive matches of the two-day tournament came in the mixed doubles final. Senior Renner To and junior Vaishali Kumar battled through a tough opponent and escaped with a 7-6 win in a third-set tiebreaker to claim the district title.
Wylie freshman Kyle Fain qualified for the regional tournament with a second-place finish in boys singles, while the duo of junior Elliot Halpin and sophomore Lola Claire Smith also advanced after finishing second in mixed doubles.
Wylie East qualified two doubles teams for the regional tournament.
Seniors Wyatt Kelley and Tai Stamps will represent the Raiders in Waco after finishing second in boys doubles at the district tournament. Seniors Ruby Sullivan and Monicah Kanyangi will join them after securing second place in girls doubles.
