Track and field teams perform well at Sheaner Relays

Last Saturday, the Wylie and Wylie East track and field teams took aim in the prestigious Jesuit Sheaner Relays.

Both schools left Dallas Jesuit High School having placed in the top 10 in at least one event, including six by Wylie.

Junior Aaron Lewis ran to bronze in the boys 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 49.39 seconds. 

Demarcus Mathes, also a junior, set the tone for the Pirates in the sprints, finishing in fifth place in the 100 with a 10.85.

Wylie had two runners finish in the top eight in the boys 800. Senior Zachary Brumfield crossed the finish line in fourth with a 1:53.47, while fellow senior Brady Kemp clocked a 1:56.66 for eighth place. Kemp added an 11th-place finish in the 3,200 with a 9:36.01. 

The Pirates’ distance medley ran to seventh with a time of 11:08.27.

Senior Cash Nweze tied for ninth in the boys high jump with a clearance of 6-2, while junior Ben Larbi took 35th in the shot put with a toss of 36-5.

Wylie East freshman Cameron Johnson also competed in the shot. He took 18th with a distance of 44-5.

One of the top performances of the day from a Collin County school occurred in the boys discus, where Wylie East junior Porter Cantrell earned bronze after a toss of 165-1. Sophomore Hudson Sepe earned a bronze-medal finish of his own, taking third in the pole vault with a height of 13-0.

The Raiders’ medley relay ran to fifth with a 10:56.84.

Sophomores Kaleab Endale and Michael Price placed 12th and 21st, respectively, in the 3,200 in times of 9:36.89 and 9:47.44. Freshman Jackson Middleton placed 12th in the high jump with a 6-2, while senior Kaleb Wright was just behind him in 13th with a clearance of 6-0.

On the girls’ side, junior Elliana Young turned in a strong showing in the high jump, finishing in second place with a clearance of 5-6. Sophomore Evangeline Williams captured fourth place in the 3,200 with a time of 10:47.06 and added an 11th-place finish in the 800 with a 2:18.26.
