Mayor Matthew Porter delivers the annual State of the City address at a special luncheon last week. Craig Kelly/City of Wylie

As Wylie approaches buildout and looks toward its next phase of growth, Mayor Matthew Porter used his annual State of the City address Tuesday, March 24, to highlight progress on roads, public safety and development across the city.

The address was delivered during a luncheon hosted by the Wylie Chamber of Commerce at Collin College, where Porter recapped accomplishments from the past year, recognized community members and outlined ongoing priorities.

Porter opened by introducing city council members, staff and visiting dignitaries, emphasizing the partnerships that continue to shape Wylie’s success. He also noted the city’s continued rise within Collin County, with a population nearing 65,000, ranking as the fifth-largest city in the county and approaching buildout with less than 5% of land remaining.

Infrastructure — particularly road construction — remained a central focus of the address. Porter highlighted progress on several major projects, including McMillen Drive, where crews are working ahead of schedule and aiming to open two lanes in the coming months, and East FM 544, which remains on track for completion this summer.
