GARLAND — The Wylie Pirates turned a tightly contested first half into a dominant second-half performance, defeating the Duncanville Panthers 6-1 Tuesday night at Williams Stadium to claim the UIL 6A Division I Area Championship.
Wylie (18-2-6) carried a narrow 1-0 lead into halftime after a defensive battle early on. Both teams struggled to find consistent offensive rhythm, but Duncanville (13-12) created multiple chances to shift momentum.
The Panthers nearly found the equalizer around the 27-minute mark, but Wylie’s defense came through with a key stop to preserve the lead. Duncanville threatened again near the 8-minute mark, only to be denied once more by the Pirates’ back line.
Wylie had an opportunity to extend its lead late in the half with an open lane toward goal, but the play was called back due to an offsides violation. The Pirates ultimately took their 1-0 advantage into the break.
The second half, however, belonged entirely to Wylie.
Johnny Kassa sparked the offensive surge with a goal off a corner kick at the 30:34 mark, pushing the lead to 2-0. Sebastian Sanchez followed with a header off another corner at 18:09 to extend the lead to 3-0.
Duncanville responded with a free kick goal at 16:37 to cut the deficit to 3-1, but any momentum was quickly erased by the Pirates.
Logan Montgomery delivered a goal from the top of the box at 15:01, followed by another from Talan Weston at 12:33. Zach Alsahli capped off the scoring at 10:06 with an impressive individual effort, weaving through defenders before finding the back of the net to make it 6-1.
“We talk all the time about trusting each other and playing together as a team, even when things are not perfect,” Wylie head coach Scott Dillon said. “That first half was tough, and Duncanville pushed us, but I’m just so proud of the way my guys responded. They didn’t panic. They came out in the second half and continued to play for each other. That’s what makes this group special. You can see how much it means to them.”
Wylie continued to apply pressure late in the match and nearly added another goal, but it was called back due to offsides.
After a competitive first half, the Pirates’ explosive second-half performance proved to be the difference, showcasing their composure, resilience and ability to capitalize on opportunities.
With the win, Wylie advances to the regional semifinals, where the Pirates will play Klein Cain later this week at a time and location to be determined.
