The Wylie and Wylie East baseball teams have looked dominant to begin district play.
Pitching paved the way for Wylie in a 6-0 triumph over North Garland on March 3. David Hanley, Nash Cooper and Nathan Reske combined on a one-hitter, with Hanley striking out eight over five dominant innings.
It didn’t take long for the Pirates’ offense to get going. Noah Smith jump-started a two-run bottom of the first for Wylie with a leadoff triple and later scored the game’s first run on a bases-loaded walk. The Pirates continued to display great plate discipline. Chase Martin followed with a bases-loaded walk of his own to give Wylie a 2-0 lead.
Wylie put the game away with a four-run fourth. Cullum Doan delivered the biggest blow, a three-run double. Smith followed with an RBI double for a 6-0 Pirates lead.
Later in the week, Wylie went 3-1 at a tournament. The Pirates won each of their final three games via shutout after losing 2-0 to Harker Heights in the tournament opener. Wylie toppled Southwest 12-0, cruised past Kaufman 9-0 and avenged the loss to Harker Heights with a 6-0 blanking of the Knights on Friday.
Wylie East is also 2-0 to begin District 9-6A play. The Raiders completed the season sweep of Lakeview Centennial on March 3 with an 8-1 win over the Patriots.
Raiders pitcher Trent Jones overwhelmed the Patriots’ lineup, striking out eight while allowing two hits and one run over 5.1 innings. Lukas Harold closed out the win after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
The pitching of both teams kept the game scoreless over the first two innings. Wylie East was first to break through. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Parker Brunson and Levi Scroggin in the third inning plated the first two Raiders runs. Matthew O’Neill made it 3-0 Wylie East with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Harold finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Later in the week, Wylie East played three games at a tournament at Lake Highlands High School. The Raiders lost 8-1 to Melissa, 3-2 to Dallas Hillcrest and 4-1 to Keller.
