The Wylie and Wylie East girls powerlifting teams will have plenty of representation at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association Class 6A state meet.
The Lady Pirates and Lady Raiders combined for 20 state qualifiers after meeting the requirements at last Thursday’s Region 6-6A meet at Prosper High School.
Andrea Nguyen won first place at 97 pounds with a total weight lifted of 635 pounds. Thalia Gonzalez earned the top individual finish at 114 pounds with an 895-pound total. Lila O’Toole took first place in the 123-pound class with an 810-pound total. Isabella Ortega won first place in the 132-pound division with a total weight lifted of 1,010 pounds. Reagan Robertson captured first at 148 pounds with a 965-pound total, Yaritza Munoz finished in first place at 165 pounds with a 980-pound total, and Yanelle Munoz captured top honors in the 181-pound class with a 1,020-pound total.
Audrey Pingleton will also represent the Lady Pirates at state after she finished in second place at 114 pounds with a total weight lifted of 715 pounds.
Ari DeGuzman, Elizabeth Vogel, Ari Vindel, Mackayla Davis, Jossalyn Wideman and Anita Schmucker also punched their tickets to state. DeGuzman finished in second place at 148 pounds with a total weight lifted of 955 pounds. Vogel also lifted a total of 955 pounds in the bench press, deadlift and squat. She finished in second place in the 181-pound division.
Vindel placed second at 198 pounds with a 980-pound total. Davis lifted the most weight by a Lady Pirate with 1,070 pounds and finished as the runner-up at 242 pounds. Wideman earned a third-place finish in the 148-pound class with a total weight lifted of 800 pounds, while Schmucker earned third place at 165 pounds with an 845-pound total.
Wylie was also on the receiving end of several “Best Lifter” awards. Ortega had the best squat, best bench press and best lifter on the light platform. Yaritza Munoz had the best squat on the heavy platform, and Yanelle Munoz posted the best bench press on the heavy platform. Gonzalez had the best deadlift on the light platform.
Gonzalez also broke the regional meet records in the 114-pound class in the bench press (225 pounds) and total weight lifted (895 pounds). DeGuzman set the bench press record in the 148-pound class with a 295-pound lift, while Davis set the record in the same event in the 242-pound class with a 310-pound lift. Ortega set new regional meet records in the 132-pound division in the bench press (275 pounds) and total weight lifted (1,010 pounds).
Alexandria Davis headlines the list of state qualifiers for Wylie East. She was crowned regional champion in the 198-pound class after lifting a total of 1,010 pounds.
Elle Peoples, Madisyn King, Alisabeth Riggins, Aliya Aguila and Serenity Warden also qualified for the state meet.
Peoples finished in third place in the 220-pound class with a total weight lifted of 900 pounds. King placed third at regionals and will represent the Lady Raiders in the 181-pound class. Riggins finished in second place in the 242-plus-pound class. She and Boswell’s Lauren Pepper both lifted 930 pounds, but Pepper won the tiebreaker to earn first place. Aguila earned second place at 105 pounds. Warden captured third place at 242 pounds.
Wylie was crowned regional champion after finishing with 74 team points — more than double the point total of the event’s second-place team, Weatherford, which accumulated 35 points. Wylie East finished in third place with 33 points.
The state meet is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 18 at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.
