DALLAS – Wylie’s boys basketball team entered Friday’s Class 6A Division I area-round playoff rematch against Duncanville determined to control the pace.
The Pirates played deliberately in an attempt to prevent the Panthers from turning the game into their usual track meet. Duncanville had scored at least 50 points in each of its previous five games, most recently a 74-38 bi-district win over Temple. Defensively, Wylie succeeded in slowing the tempo, holding Duncanville to 45 points.
Yet as well as Wylie played defensively, Duncanville’s defense was even better. After the teams were tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter, the Panthers turned up their defensive pressure and held the Pirates to just 15 points over the final three quarters as Wylie suffered a season-ending 45-25 loss at Bryan Adams High School.
“We wanted to make it a lower-scoring game, and it was a lower-scoring game,” Wylie head coach Stephen Pearce said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t put the ball in the hole. Holding them to 45 points was pretty good. We’ve got to be able to score the ball better.”
