FORNEY — Despite an inspiring second-half rally that saw the Wylie East boys basketball team reduce a 13-point deficit to three with six minutes remaining, the Raiders were never able to get over the hump and fell 64-53 in a Class 6A Division II bi-district playoff game from North Forney High School on Tuesday.
Wylie East turned to its defense to get back into the game. The Raider forced seven Tyler Legacy turnovers in the third quarter and three more in the fourth quarter.
A steal by senior Praise Olufemi sparked a Wylie East fast break, which was finished with a Preston Samuels outback off the glass. That basket reduced Tyler Legacy’s lead to 47-44 with 6:25 left in regulation.
Tyler Legacy responded with an 8-0 run over the next two minute to seize control. Junior 6-foot-7 forward Zyere Ceasar, who posted 21 points, got the run started by making a contested 3-pointer from the left corner.
Senior Mikiyas Abiy was brilliant in defeat. He scored 13 of his 20 points in the first half.
