Last year, the Wylie and Wylie East softball teams split the District 9-6A title.

Fast forward to last week and both teams showed that they are more than capable of scoring runs, and in bunches.

Wylie and Wylie East dominated in shutout wins over North Garland (17-0) and Lakeview Centennial (20-0), respectively.

Wylie, a regional semifinalist last season, needed little time to take control against North Garland. A two-run single by Julia Barta highlighted a five-run top of the first for the Pirates. A three-run top of the second increased Wylie’s advantage to 8-0. A leadoff triple by Mia Gamez ignited the rally.

Barta, Gamez, Gracie Gragert and Ava Cook had two hits apiece to lead a 14-hit attack for Wylie, seven of which went for extra bases.

Avery Neville tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Wylie continued its winning ways later in the week at a tournament in Allen, where the Pirates went 4-1 with wins over Frisco Panther Creek (9-8), Lubbock Monterey (9-4), LD Bell (10-9) and Little Elm (13-5).

Wylie East also went 4-1 in Allen, earning wins over Lewisville (8-5), Frisco Emerson (7-6), Ridge Point (4-3) and Hallsville (5-4).

Earlier in the week, Gabby Flores notched three hits while Kinley Kovar delivered a standout two-way performance, finishing with three hits while allowing no hits with two strikeouts over 1 2/3 innings in Wylie East’s victory over Lakeview Centennial.

The Lady Raiders plated 15 runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Flores drove in two runs with a triple for a 12-0 lead. Dalila Guzman capped the inning with an RBI single.
