District play for soccer teams in 9-6A is nearing the halfway points. And for Wylie and Wylie East, the squads have put themselves in a position to contend for the district title, especially on the girls side.
The Wylie Lady Pirates continued their recent dominance with a pair of blowout wins last week, defeating Lakeview Centennial 10-1 last Friday and Rowlett 7-0 on Feb. 2.
Kennedy Butler notched two goals and one assist in the victory over Rowlett while Maci Hatzenbuehler also scored two goals. Taylor Kelly added one goal and two assists. Addalyn Land and Marelene Reyna each scored one goal. Against Lakeview Centennial, Ronelyse Hartfield had a hat trick. Butler posted a big night on the pitch with two goals and two assists, while Hatzenbuehler added two goals and one assists for the Lady Pirates (12-4 overall, 6-1 District 9-6A).
Wylie East is also 6-1 in district play.
The Lady Raiders beat South Garland and Rowlett by 8-0 finals and topped Garland 3-0 last Friday.
Junior Sophie Preston led the way for Wylie East against Garland with two goals and one assists, while senior Hannah Warren accounted for the team’s other goal.
Goalkeepers Addyson Lomax and Hailey Fincher combined on a clean sheet and Fincher recorded one save in the shutout win.
On the boys’ side, the Pirates (9-1-5 overall, 5-1-1 District 9-6A) edged Lakeview Centennial to earn their fifth consecutive win. Senior Logan Montgomery and freshman Luke Montgomery each scored one goal.
The win came four days after Wylie cruised to a 5-1 home win over Rowlett. Four different players scored for the Pirates, led by a two-goal, one-assist performance by senior Zach Alshali. Luke Montgomery added one goal and two assists. Sophomore Edil Quirez-Medina and senior Sebastian Sachez had one goal apiece.
Wylie East (3-7-2, 1-4-2) picked up its first district regulation win last week, posting a 4-1 home win against Rowlett on Feb. 4. Brook Sampson had two goals, followed by one apiece from Braylon Dyess and Max Gallegos. Kennedy Mpenzi scored once in last Friday’s 2-1 loss to Garland.
