Despite icy road conditions forcing the cancellation of school for four days last week, the ice cleared up in time for last Friday’s District 6-6A wrestling tournament at Prosper Rock Hill High School.
It proved to be a successful outing on the mat for Wylie and Wylie East as both schools qualified wrestlers for the regional tournament.
Wylie East has one regional qualifier.
Jacob West is bound for regionals after earning third place at 157 pounds. He made quick work of Prosper’s Jackson Owen in the third-place match, needing just 37 seconds to pin Owen. West earned his spot in the regional tournament after winning a defensive-minded match over Plano East’s Bernie Cox in the consolation semifinals by a 6-1 final.
Wylie, which had a strong performance from its upper weights, will bring three wrestlers to the regional tournament.
Wyatt Richardson is a regional qualifier after he wrestled to third place at 285 pounds at the district tournament. He went 3-1 on the day. His only loss was a pin to Allen’s Faris Price in the semifinals. But Richardson bounced back to win his last two matches, capped off by a first-period pin of Rock Hill’s Connor McGough in the third-place match.
Kaylan Wara qualified for regionals after placing fourth at 175 pounds, while Tristan Yoder took fourth at 215 pounds.
Wara, who entered the district tournament as the No. 9 seed at 175 pounds, rallied in the consolation bracket after losing his first match by technical fall. He went undefeated the rest of the day and capped off his run with a pin over Prosper’s Soheil Buchholz in the fourth-place match.
Yoder went 3-2 on the day, capped by a victory over Prosper’s Devin Allen in his final match.
The Region II-6A Tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at Allen High School.
