The Wylie boys and girls basketball teams will finish this week holding down the top spots in District 9-6A.
The Wylie boys (17-10 overall, 8-2 district), last season’s district champion, moved up to first place in District 9-6A after earning a dominant 58-28 road win over Naaman Forest last Friday, coupled with a 60-53 loss by Rowlett (10-10, 6-3) to Garland (4-20, 1-9).
Defense set the tone for Wylie’s eighth district victory. The Pirates held the Rangers without a point in the first quarter and to five in the first half.
All the while, Wylie used good 3-point shooting to find a good offensive rhythm. Seniors Chase Hughes and Darian Romano combined for three 3-pointers in the first quarter before the Pirates made three more 3s in the second quarter to further build on their advantage. The Pirates led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter and 28-5 at halftime.
Hughes led all scorers with 16 points, while Romano tallied 11 in a winning effort. Senior Theo Allen contributed nine and sophomore Tre Pierce had eight.
The Wylie Lady Pirates also pieced together a dominant performance against Naaman Forest. The Lady Pirates (20-6, 12-0) started the game on a 22-2 run and never looked back in cruising to a 68-31 road win.
Freshman Sade Mathes, sophomore Aubrey Green and junior Ronelyse Hartfield fueled the fast start as they combined for 22 of the Lady Pirates’ 22 points in the first quarter. Mathes led all scorers with 19 points. Green also reached double figures in scoring as she had 17 in a winning effort. Hartfield netted eight points, followed by eight from junior Alyson Jeske.
