With a Jan. 14 dual between Wylie and Wylie East hanging in the balance, Pirates junior Chris Ingendorf dug deep after trailing 9-1.
In the match that would determine the outcome of the dual, Ingendorf turned Wylie East’s Raphael Ayarkwa-Duah onto his back and pinned him at the 4:49 mark of the 190-pound match, clinching a 41-35 victory for the Pirates at the Williams Center.
Last week’s dual produced one of the closest final scores between the programs to date. Wylie East won seven of the 10 matches that were wrestled, including seven straight. However, Wylie emerged with the dual victory because of forfeits. The Raiders, shorthanded because of injuries and illnesses, were open at 106 pounds, 113, 215 and 285, which resulted in 28 team points for the Pirates.
A 16-1 technical fall by Noah Jagielski at 120 pounds gave Wylie a 17-0 lead after just three matches.
Connor Liu scored the Raiders’ first team points with a 16-1 technical fall at 126 pounds. Mason Philo (132), Blake Moore (138) and Kaden Roach (144) followed with pins, with Roach’s victory giving Wylie East its first lead of the night at 23-17.
One of the dual’s most entertaining matches came at 150 pounds, where Wylie East’s Andrew West rallied from a 6-1 deficit to earn a 7-6 decision.
Jake West, fresh off a third-place finish at the Cougar Classic, dominated with a 21-6 technical fall at 157 pounds. Casey McCloud then made it seven straight wins for Wylie East by posting a 16-4 major decision at 165.
Kaylan Wara snapped Wylie East’s win streak with a pin in the 175-pound bout, and Ingendorf followed with his dramatic comeback at 190 pounds to clinch another Crosstown Showdown victory for the Pirates.
