The Wylie and Wylie East wrestling teams traveled to The Colony High School last weekend for the Cougar Classic.
Wylie East earned one podium finish on the boys side, as Jacob West placed third at 157 pounds.
West entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed in a 24-wrestler field and opened competition in dominant fashion, recording a first-period pin of Richardson’s Ryan Pham. He was relegated to the consolation bracket after a pinfall loss in his second match, but rebounded by winning his next three bouts. A 9-0 major decision over Marcus’ Ashtyn Springer advanced West to the third-place match, which he won by forfeit.
Jaden Phok (120), Connor Liu (126), Mason Philo (132), Blake Moore (138), Kaden Roach (144), Andrew West (150), Levi Coin (165) and Casey McCloud (175) also competed for the Raiders.
Wylie brought 11 wrestlers to the Cougar Classic — Brayden Baro (106), Jonah King (113), Noah Jagielski (120), Ahmad Ibrahimi (126), Carson Cleveland (132), Jacob Gomez (144), Kevin Zhai (150), Benjamin Thai (157), Bryce Elwart (165), Kaylan Wara (175) and Chris Ingendorf (190) — but did not have a top-four finisher.
Three days earlier, Wylie East’s boys dropped both duals at McKinney Boyd, falling 54-22 to Princeton and 48-28 to McKinney Boyd. Andrew West recorded a 9-0 major decision at 150 pounds against McKinney Boyd. Philo (132), Jacob West (157) and McCloud (175) earned wins against Princeton, with McCloud winning by pin and West and Philo each recording technical falls.
Wylie split a double dual at Lake Highlands that same night, defeating Frisco Reedy 50-30 before falling 42-24 to host Lake Highlands.
Ibrahimi (126), David Moir (138) and Wyatt Richardson (285) each won by pin against Reedy, while Jagielski recorded a 17-0 technical fall at 120 pounds.
