For the Wylie and Wylie East boys soccer teams, neither the Pirates nor Raiders had to leave town last weekend as both squads took aim at a tournament that was held at Wylie ISD Stadium.
Wylie won both games, earning a 2-0 win over Garland ILHS on Thursday and edging Greenville 3-2 last Friday. Seniors Talan Weston and Zach Alshali each scored one goal for the Pirates in their win over Garland ILHS. Wylie led 1-0 at halftime before posting a second goal in the second half. Against Greenville, Wylie (4-0-3) scored twice during the second half to break a 1-1 halftime tie.
Wylie East played two low-scoring games at Wylie ISD Stadium. The Raiders (2-2) defeated Greenville 2-0 last Saturday evening to earn their second shutout win of the season. Senior Joel Gonzalez opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Senior Dylan Falay made it 2-0 Wylie East with a goal in the 47th minute. Earlier in the week, Wylie East lost 2-1 to Plano.
Wylie improved to 7-3 after notching three wins at the Forney Tournament.
It was an offensive explosion for the Lady Pirates, who scored 16 goals in the four matches that they played in Forney. After opening with a 3-1 win over Frisco Emerson last Thursday, Wylie won both games Friday, earning a 5-1 victory against Liberty Hill and then a dominant 8-0 shutout of Iowa Colony. The Lady Pirates’ three-game win streak came to an end in a 1-0 setback to Tyler Legacy on Saturday.
Against Emerson, Maci Hatzenbuehler scored two goals, followed by one from Ella Knauss. Hatzenbuehler netted one goal in the win over Liberty Hill, while Taylor Kelly and Kennedy Butler each found the back of the net twice. Butler scored twice in Wylie’s rout of Iowa Colony. She was one of five different goal scorers for the Lady Pirates, who got two goals apiece from Izzy Ragojo and Savannah Pickens.
Wylie East (6-1) continued its dominant ways by winning all three matches last week. The Lady Raiders cruised to a 7-0 win against McKinney North on Thursday, topped Frisco Independence 2-0 on Friday before earning a 4-0 win over Frisco Centennial that same day. It was the fourth straight shutout win for the Lady Raiders.
