GARLAND – Trailing 1-0 early in the first quarter against South Garland, Wylie East coach Meaghan Hodapp didn’t wait long to send a message. Out came the five Lady Raider starters and in came five new players, which led to a 25-0 run that stretched over two quarters.
It was a message that was well received in an emphatic 72-15 rout over the home team Tuesday night.
“You have to send a message,” Hodapp said. “I thought we were messy in the first half and didn’t play up to our potential. The second half was much better.”
The Lady Raiders held South Garland to one point in the first quarter and two in the third quarter in the easy win.
“They weren’t making shots, but we were playing some good defense,” Hodapp said. “You’ve got to play better and play hard all the time.”
Wylie East improved to 3-1 in District 9-6A play and 9-7 overall. South Garland is now 0-5 in district play and 6-8 overall.
“I think we’re meshing together as a team. We have so many young players it takes a while, but we’re getting tougher,” Hodapp said.
Zoey Lundberg led all Wylie East scorers with 15 points. Gracie Edge had 11 points, while Morgan Jennings added 10.
Wylie East’s swarming defense continually bothered South Garland during the first half. The Lady Raiders didn’t allow South Garland to advance the ball most of the time and, when it did, they blocked its shot attempts.
Wylie East led 10-1, without a made 3-pointer, at the end of the first quarter and didn’t allow South Garland to hit its first made two-point basket until late in the second quarter.
Bolden made the first 3-pointer for Wylie East early in the second quarter as the Lady Raiders were clicking both offensively and defensively. Edge stole a pass for East with 3:08 left in the quarter, drove the length of the court and scored for a 24-point lead.
South Garland finally hit back-to-back field goals before halftime, but Lundberg hit a long 2-point basket for Wylie East at the buzzer to give the Lady Raiders a 22-point lead, 29-7, at halftime.
