The Wylie and Wylie East wrestling teams stayed in town last Saturday to compete in the Raider Invitational, combining for 11 top-four finishes at the Williams Center.
Wylie East’s Jacob West earned first place at 157 pounds, finishing 3-0 on the day. He opened with a 21-6 technical fall in the quarterfinals, earned a pin in the semifinals, and posted a 9-3 decision over Princeton’s Nolan Culverhouse in the championship match.
Connor Liu (126 pounds), Mason Philo (132), and Levi Coin (175) all earned third place, while Blake Moore (144) and Kaden Roach (150) captured fourth. Jaden Phok (120), Cameron Serna (138), William Mitchell (165), and Connor Webb (285) also competed for the Raiders.
Kaylan Wara led the charge for Wylie, placing second at 175 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, Wara cruised to a pin in the quarterfinals, then posted a 9-3 decision in the semifinals but lost 8-1 to Highland Park’s Bennett Ham in the championship match.
Noah Jagelski (120), Carson Cleveland (132), David Moir (138), and Jayden Martin (190) wrestled to fourth place. Benjamin Thai (157), Brayden Baro (106), Jeremiah Ruiz (144), Kharchou Mahammed (175), Nolan Slaughter (138), Payton Maier (126), and Syed Ali (165) also competed for the Pirates.
The Raider Invitational capped a busy week for both programs.
Wylie went 1-1 in a tri-meet last Thursday, defeating Prosper Rock Hill 43-34 but falling to Plano East 51-21.
Against Rock Hill, Wylie received strong performances from its upper weights, winning four of the final five matches.
Wyatt Richardson (285 pounds) secured a second-period pin in the final bout to seal the win. Syed Ali started the comeback with a 13-12 decision at 165 pounds, followed by Wara in the 175-pound match and Martin with a 10-0 major decision at 190 pounds. Rock Hill rallied to within 37-34 after a pin at 215, but Richardson’s win clinched the dual. Jonah King (113), Jeremiah Ruiz (144), and Thomas Whitemire (150) also added pins.
Against Plano East, Wylie picked up victories from Carson Cleveland (132, 17-1 technical fall), Whitemire (150, 10-6 decision), Wara (175, 6-3 sudden-victory decision), Tristan Yoder (215, 8-0 major decision), and Richardson (285, first-period pin).
Plano East secured the dual with bonus points from pins by Cameron Tran (113), Bilal Habib (120), Michael Conner (126), Ozzie Thornton (144), and Andy Santamaria (190), along with major and technical decisions from Jacob Caranfa (138) and Ian Garcia (165).
Wylie East battled in a dual against McKinney last Wednesday but fell 39-30. Cameron Serna posted a 10-3 decision at 138 pounds, Blake Moore earned a first-period pin at 144, Andrew West pinned his opponent at 157, and Casey McCloud notched a 10-3 victory at 165.
