Prior to last week, the Wylie East girls basketball team struggled to string together wins. In fact, the Lady Raiders hadn’t won more than one game in a row while starting the season with a 2-6 record.

All it took for Wylie East to find some consistency was a strong performance at the Allen Hoopfest.

After losing to Hays to begin the three-day tournament, Wylie East rallied in the consolation bracket, winning three straight games with wins over Rowlett, Anna and Ursuline Academy before falling to DeSoto in the consolation final.

“We did a much better job working as a team to score,” said head coach Meaghan Hodapp. “They did a much better job of executing offensively and defensively.”

Morgan Jennings, Sharmayne Jones, and Sidney Sanders really stepped up when it came to taking care of the ball and getting rebounds. Mychal Henderson had a great shooting game for Wylie East against DeSoto. Gracie Edge was also a significant contributor for the Lady Raiders throughout the tournament.

Wylie East is hopeful that performance will carry over into District 9-6A play, which begins Tuesday with a home game against Lakeview Centennial.

“The goal is to grow with each game,” Hodapp said. “My hope is we are starting to gel in understanding our goal and how to achieve great things when you trust your teammates.”
