Last week was the first week of the early signing period for high school seniors across the nation.
Student-athletes from Wylie put pen to paper and signed a National Letter of Intent with their college of choice, where they will compete in athletics and pursue their academic goals.
One of the largest ceremonies in northeast Collin County took place at Wylie High School last Thursday morning, where nine student-athletes signed during a ceremony held inside the Montgomery Center.
Less than two weeks after helping to lead the Lady Pirates volleyball team to an appearance in the area round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs and a 16-0 record in District 9-6A play, setter Olivia Royal made it official with Concordia College, and defensive specialist Mallory Kendrick signed with Henderson State University.
Shortstop/pitcher Amira Forbit (Southeastern Oklahoma State University) and right fielder Ava Cook (University of Texas at Tyler), who led the Wylie softball team to a co-district title and an appearance in the regional semifinals earlier this year, signed last Thursday.
From the Wylie baseball team, right-handed pitcher Chase Martin will compete for Bossier Parish Community College, and left-handed pitcher/outfielder Cooper Watts signed with Richland College.
Cameron Pero, who helped to lead the Lady Pirates to a district title in girls soccer earlier this year, will play forward for the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team.
Paige Orr will run cross-country and track and field for Southern Arkansas University, and Zachary Brumfield will do the same for Rice University. Both runners hold the second-fastest 5K time in school history.
