The Wylie Prep cross-country team concluded its season at the TAPPS Division III state meet, held Oct. 27 at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco.
The meet proved to be an overwhelming success for the Patriots. The girls team tied with Lucas Christian Academy for fourth place — each finishing with 111 points — while the boys team captured fifth with 133 points. Providence Classical of Spring swept the team titles, posting a winning score of 21 points in the boys division and 31 in the girls division.
Senior Olivia Ritchey earned a podium finish, placing eighth in the girls two-mile race with a time of 14:25. Junior Shiloh Gilbert (16th, 14:25) also cracked the top 20. Juniors Eden Wood (24th, 15:14) and Lisse Beugelsdijk (41st, 16:42), along with freshman Adelyn Brymer (51st, 17:44), also competed for Wylie Prep in Waco.
Senior Jadon McDonald placed 12th in the boys 5-kilometer race with a time of 18:56 and also earned academic all-state honors. Seniors Landon McGrew (29th, 20:32) and Matthan Jones (34th, 20:44) competed for the final time for the Patriots. Juniors Karter Beugelsdijk (44th, 21:57) and Matthew Schutter (67th, 23:37) rounded out the Wylie Prep lineup.
“All year, we discussed about running their race and running past their boundaries and into the uncomfortable,” said Wylie Prep head coach Patrick Williams. “Every single runner ran their best race at state and with fierceness. Everyone fought hard. They didn’t grow weary.”
Providence Classical’s Sarah Kleppel won the girls race in 12:09, finishing nearly a minute ahead of the field. In the boys race, Cornerstone Christian McKinney sophomore Nathaniel Lugo (16:23) claimed the state title.
