The Community Independent School District (CISD) has implemented a series of security measures following several lockdowns at Community High School in Nevada because of gun threats.
Most recently, A 17-year-old student was arrested Thursday, Oct. 2, for having a handgun in a hallway.
“The weapon was not loaded, no shots were fired, and no one was injured,” the district said in a statement.
The incident followed another lockdown in September and discovery of a gun on campus in May.
The CISD school board held a special meeting Tuesday, Oct. 7, at which parents called for increased security to prevent future threats.
“Each of these incidents has caused fear, disruption and anxiety, not only for the children sitting in classrooms, but for the parents waiting anxiously by their phones, praying that their child is safe,” said CISD parent Hannah Lloyd.
Chief Scotty Morrison of the Community Independent School District Police Department outlined a comprehensive approach to enhancing campus security, emphasizing deterrence, enforcement and peace of mind.
