Wylie and Wylie East qualified both their boys and girls teams for the Region II-6A cross country meet. The Wylie East boys placed second (47 points), narrowly edging the Pirates (54 points), ending Wylie’s streak of eight straight district titles. The Lady Pirates took second with 44 points, topping Wylie East (49) by five.
Wylie East sophomore Evangeline Williams (18:11) pulled away from Sachse junior Abigail Leonard (18:40) about two-thirds through the race.
Madison Akers (third, 19:31), Isabelle Price (14th, 20:42), Amiya Runsewe (15th, 20:57), Layla Talbott (16th, 21:04) and Reagan Tolar (19th, 21:11) rounded out the top performances.
Wylie East’s boys also impressed, placing seven runners in the top 21. Alongside Endale’s runner-up finish, Kirubel Feyissa (fourth, 16:14), Carter Roberts (11th, 16:45), Roman Lopez (14th, 16:55), John Middleton (16th, 17:02), Fraol Endale (19th, 17:17) and Diego Juarez (21st, 17:32) helped the Raiders take second overall.
A freshman led the way for the Lady Pirates: Annabelle Angeles placed fourth in 19:38, followed by Kinsley Ferguson (sixth, 20:11), Vanessa Vazquez (eighth, 20:20), Kyler Eiben (ninth, 20:22) and Paige Orr (17th, 21:09).
On the boys’ side, Wylie senior Zachary Brumfield qualified for regionals with a fifth-place finish (16:27). Landon Cooper (ninth, 16:36), Caden Zurita (10th, 16:43), Brady Kemp (13th, 16:55), Karter Kekuna (17th, 17:08), Jaron Savage (18th, 17:10) and Thorne Owen (20th, 17:20) all finished inside the top 20.
The Region II-6A meet is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Harold Patterson Sports Complex in Arlington. The girls’ race begins at 9 a.m.,followed by the boys at 9:30 a.m.
