Wylie East senior defensive back Ruke Eruvwetaghware posted two interceptions and also chipped in on special teams with a blocked punt that resulted in a Raiders touchdown, leading Wylie East to a 38-7 victory over Sachse at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Eruvwetaghware’s two interceptions paced a big night on defense that saw Wylie East force four Sachse turnovers and limited the Mustangs to 197 total yards.
Wylie East (5-0 overall, 3-0 District 9-6A) built a 17-0 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter on the power of a Jonathan Utubor rushing touchdown, a 36-yard field goal by Geovani Darquea and a Brysan Muller punt block return for a touchdown.
Sachse (3-3, 2-2) made it a game late in the second quarter.
Junior quarterback Christian McCaffrey drove the Mustangs down the field on a seven-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a 27-yard touchdown reception by senior Dirk Williams Jr.
Williams Jr. had six catches for 43 yards. McCaffrey completed 12 of 29 passes for 139 yards with a touchdown but threw three interceptions.
Wylie East turned its running game in the second half to ignite a 21-0 scoring run and turn a close game into a rout.
Utubor scored on a 49-yard touchdown run in which he lined up in the “Wildcat” formation, igniting a 21-0 scoring run for Wylie East. He finished with 136 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Junior Victor Ekpo added a one-yard touchdown later in the third quarter.
Senior quarterback Jaiden McLemore connected with junior wide receiver Amir Porter on an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
McLemore went 22 of 35 for 239 yards.
